Control or Not Control… That is the Question!

Since the time of its founding, one of the core objectives of the Mexican Board for Research and Development of Financial Reporting Standards (CINIF for its acronym in Spanish) has been to promote a convergence of Mexican Financial Reporting Standards (Mexican FRS) with International Financial Reporting Standards (IFRS) issued by the International Accounting Standards Board (IASB).

Between January 2006 and December 31, 2011, the CINIF issued 33 FRS, 19 FRS interpretations (FRSI) and two FRS orientations (FRSO), which leaves us with a total of 11 standards still pending convergence.1 Table 1 shows the current status of Mexican FRS based on Standards in effect as of January 1, 2012 (CINIF-IMCP, 2012).

iPad vs. Kindle Fire One Year Later: Didn’t we expect a price war?

Amazon just announced its impressive line of new tablets. Only one year ago the announcement of the Kindle Fire, the 7-inch tablet sold at the outrageous price of USD 199, opened an intellectual debate among analysts, journalists and computer geeks: could the new tablet compete successfully with the undefeated champion, the iPad 2? Does that mean that for the first time Apple would have to reduce the price of its celebrated tablet, possibly starting a price war?

Human Capital, Financial Capital and Investor’s Life Cycle

Saving is the opposite of consumption. We save so that we can consume more in the future or at least consume the same amount as we do today. For example, the objective of the pension systems around the world is to ensure that people, at the time of their retirement, can replace their labor income with the resources saved during their working years. This means that the wealth they generated during the years they worked should be enough to support them throughout their entire life.
